NY Times: Elizabeth Wants John to Endorse Hillary

In what I find to be a truly startling development, Elizabeth Edwards has been quietly trying to convince her husband, John Edwards, to endorse Hillary Clinton. Elizabeth Edwards has long been a political activist and has spoken publicly about her preference for Hillary's health care plan over Obama's, but I always assumed it stopped there.   Apparently , I was wrong.

Many of Mr. Edwards's supporters in North Carolina have been quietly pressing him to endorse Mr. Obama, and a large group of them, led by Ed Turlington, his campaign chairman during the last presidential race, came forward publicly last week to support Mr. Obama.

On the other hand, Mrs. Edwards, her husband's closest and most trusted adviser, has made it clear that she favors Mrs. Clinton; aides said she had recently tried to persuade Mr. Edwards to do the same.

Even if he remains neutral, Mrs. Edwards's endorsement would carry weight, some voters suggested.

After Edwards bowed out of the race, the blogs were filled with dairies about how Edwards would never endorse Hillary, for various reasons.  The two most often mentioned were Joe Trippi and Elizabeth both held nothing but contempt for Hillary Clinton.  That seemed reasonable to me at the time, as the there didn't appear to be much love lost between the Clinton and Edwards campaigns.  But apparently, time does heal some wounds.

I don't really expect John Edwards to endorse anyone at this point - if he picks the wrong horse, it would certainly throw cold water on any hopes he has of serving in a Clinton or Obama administration - but that's just a guess. i have no more idea of what's happening in John Edwards head than the next person.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, could very well endorse Hillary herself.  For whatever endorsements are worth, this would be a great one to have.

Here's hoping that Elizabeth will not only endorse Hillary herself, but also convince John to do the same.

I don't see how John could endorse Obama (2.00 / 2)

with his terrible healthcare plan and how it would impact people with health issues like the people Elizabeth meets when she goes in for her chemotherapy. Its like Obama is abandoning the people who really need him the most.
I was looking through my old bookmarks last night and I found a link to a WSJ article in which Obama;s advisor Goolsbee admits that Obama is leaving the sickest 20% out, because 'its too expensive'. He claimed at that time that Hillary 'was too', but the Clinton campaign came back with numbers showing that they were going to do their very best to cover everybody, especially those who need it the most (the ones Obama leaves out, because of the cost)

Read the original article for yourself..
http://online.wsj.com/public/article_pri nt/SB119681696156513818.html

As I said, since then, the Clinton campaign has done additional simulations showing that they could do this and peg the cost to no more than 5-10% of income which is a way these services are typically priced in other developed countries but its never been done here to my knowledge. ITS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. People will get more for less and a HUGE weight will be lifted from people's backs. Poor people will pay next to nothing.

Meanwhile, under Obama THERE IS NO LIMIT TO HOW MUCH YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY IN UNCOVERED COSTS...

Nope, Edwards is not a super. Seems odd, but there it is.

Re: Keep your fingers crossed (none / 0)

I believe that all former presidential and vice presidential nominees are superdelegates. Edwards is a super by virtue of his having been the VP nominee in 2004. I think Geraldine Ferraro and Michael Dukakis are supers for the same reason.

It looks to me (none / 0)

That it must only be successful Pres and VP candidates that are supers.  I didnt see Dukakis, Bentson or Ferraro listed as super D's on demconwatch.

But Mondale was there (listed by virtue of him being VP in the past) and the only other 'VP / Pres' people listed were Gore, Carter and Bill.

So I dont think Edwards is a super, but as I said I didnt see Ferraro listed either.  And I thought she was.  Is she?

More important than the one vote (none / 0)

he would have as a superdelegate is the number of pledged delegates that he controls.

Re: lol (none / 0)

He holds like 13 delegates more if Michigan counts but don't think he is a super himself.

Re: Keep your fingers crossed (2.00 / 2)

One of the reasons I went from supporting Edwards to supporting Clinton was her universal health care proposal. Glad to see that Elizabeth Edwards has come to the same conclusion.

Elizabeth Edwards' (2.00 / 2)

endorsement of HRC's health care plan "sealed" my candidate as I moved on after JRE dropped out.

This also reinforces HRC's ability to listen, learn and adapt...

I think that for many people (2.00 / 2)

her endorsement would carry more weight.  I hope she will just go ahead and do it.

Re: NY Times: Elizabeth Wants John to Endorse Hill (2.00 / 1)

I always knew Edwards just wasn't gonna go with Obama. Edwards really DOES know what working people want and what is good for them.

I think JE (none / 0)

Doesnt want to get involved in the endorsement game.

He wants to be considered a national party heavy weight, not an NC heavy weight.

So he wants to play in thr Pelosi, Reid, Gore, Carter, Dean crowd.

I think Edwards endorsing, for either, is bad for Edwards.

His wife on the other hand, thats another story.  I dont see an outright endorsement from her, but I think its pretty clear she has her issue and she has aligned herself solidly with Hillary on it.  It can do Hillary no harm thats for sure, but I dont know how much measurable good it would do either.

Elizabeth Wants John to Endorse Hillary (none / 0)

I think Elizabeth should go ahead and endorse Hillary on her own and campaign for her at some places. It can shore up the women and rural white vote further for Hillary.

I hope that doesnt sound racist or sexist. Not the intent at all.

JRE will endorse Obama or nobody at all.  If I had to be EE loathes Hillary.  EE only likes Hillary's health plan because it is her and her husbands.

Re: NY Times: Elizabeth Wants John to Endorse Hill (none / 0)

Weren't there some polls taken a while back that showed an Edwards endorsement would actually cost either candidates votes in NC?

I don't have them off hand, but I remember it showing that Clinton in particular would take a pretty hefty hit, somewhere around 5%.

sounds like you're pulling that out of your cape, captain america. google shows nothing remotely resembling what you describe. it just didn't happen.

I am hopeful (2.00 / 1)

Elizabeth Edwards wrote a great op-ed over the weekend, reminding us that it is time to get real about this contest and focus on actual issues, not distractions.

In that context, I thought her choice of title was interesting:  Bowling: 1, Healthcare: 0.

Bowling = Barack Obama
Healthcare = Hillary Clinton

I believe that Elizabeth hasn't been so distracted by hype that she's forgotten how crucial it is that we have a President who will fight for universal healthcare.  She may wait until after North Carolina, in order to feel that she has been more nuetral, but I believe there is a good chance she will endorse Hillary.

I would imagine Elizabeth endorses Hillary.  Who knows about John, he could endorse her too.
