In what I find to be a truly startling development, Elizabeth Edwards has been quietly trying to convince her husband, John Edwards, to endorse Hillary Clinton. Elizabeth Edwards has long been a political activist and has spoken publicly about her preference for Hillary's health care plan over Obama's, but I always assumed it stopped there. Apparently , I was wrong.
Many of Mr. Edwards's supporters in North Carolina have been quietly pressing him to endorse Mr. Obama, and a large group of them, led by Ed Turlington, his campaign chairman during the last presidential race, came forward publicly last week to support Mr. Obama. On the other hand, Mrs. Edwards, her husband's closest and most trusted adviser, has made it clear that she favors Mrs. Clinton; aides said she had recently tried to persuade Mr. Edwards to do the same.
Even if he remains neutral, Mrs. Edwards's endorsement would carry weight, some voters suggested.
After Edwards bowed out of the race, the blogs were filled with dairies about how Edwards would never endorse Hillary, for various reasons. The two most often mentioned were Joe Trippi and Elizabeth both held nothing but contempt for Hillary Clinton. That seemed reasonable to me at the time, as the there didn't appear to be much love lost between the Clinton and Edwards campaigns. But apparently, time does heal some wounds.
I don't really expect John Edwards to endorse anyone at this point - if he picks the wrong horse, it would certainly throw cold water on any hopes he has of serving in a Clinton or Obama administration - but that's just a guess. i have no more idea of what's happening in John Edwards head than the next person.
Elizabeth, on the other hand, could very well endorse Hillary herself. For whatever endorsements are worth, this would be a great one to have.
